Incorporating Technology with Kindness

This month we have been working on using Google Slides. When we first introduce an app to students we want to make sure the content isn’t academic heavy. This way our students aren’t trying to use a new app and learn content at the same time. 

The lesson was about kindness. We have been working on adjectives in our writing and grammar. So for a fun lesson, the students created a kindness jar for each friend in their class. Students thought of all the different words that would describe our friends. 

I used a mason jar as a background and added a heart for each student in my classroom. I duplicated the slide 20 times, one for each student and myself.

The students then went to the slide that matched their classroom number and added their names to the tag. Students then worked to add a kind word about their classmate in a heart. At one point a student said, “Wow, Owen you are blowing up right now!” They absolutely loved reading kind words others had written for them and leaving them for others.

The love of teaching that is

It has been difficult to get back into teaching. We have been teaching face to face since August but with all different kinds of ‘rules’ in place. It has really tested me to find the love of teaching. Now for those of you who are still remote or hybrid teaching…you my friend, most likely need to dig a little deeper to find that love. 

Don’t get me wrong I absolutely love teaching but this year has made me realize how much we took for granted. For example, seeing our student’s whole faces, hearing their soft whispers or noise making, and knowing who actually made the sound instead of looking at a see of eyes and wondering where it came from because everyone is muffled under a mask.

It’s time to find a new grove, realize that this isn’t going away as soon as we had hoped and that the love of teaching is still possible.
